A fine set of four volumes presented to, or retained by, Simon Baldwin Chittenden (1814-1889) including two books presented to him on the occasion of his retirement from active business in 1875, following his recent election to Congress the previous year.

 

Proceedings of the Complimentary Dinner given to Hon. Simeon B. Chittenden by his Friends on the Occasion of his Retirement from Business. (New York: Privately printed, 1875), 47 pp. + 15 un-paginated signature leaves preceding, bound in embossed gilt titled leather boards, with ribbed and titled spine. Boards and spine rubbed, pages clean. The front leaves are signed by some of the most prominent businessmen in New York City including John Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), Charles Lewis Tiffany (1812-1902), Levi P. Morton (1824-1920), William M. Evarts (1818-1901), Cyrus Field (1819-1892), William E. Dodge (1805-1883), Samuel D. Babcock (1821-1902), Moses Taylor (1806-1882), Samuel Sloan (1817-1907), John Aikman Stuart (1822-1926), Elliot C. Cowdin (1819-1880), John Jay Cisco (1806-1884), Royal Phelps (1809-1884), William H. Fogg (1817-1884), Percy R. Pyne (1857-1929), William Allen Butler (1825-1902), Josiah M. Fiske (c. 1821-1892), James W. Beekman (1815-1877) and approximately eighty others. The signed edition is accompanied by an unsigned copy of Proceedings of the Complimentary Dinner given to Hon. Simeon B. Chittenden by his Friends on the Occasion of his Retirement from Business. (New York: Privately printed, 1875), 8vo., 47 pp. bound in brown leather boards titled in gilt with ribbed spine. Boards and spine rubbed, front board slightly warped, pages clean.

 

The collection also features another privately printed, and untitled, book,([n.p.], c. 1882), 128 pp. 4to. Bound in soft green leather boards with Chittenden's monogram in gilt on the front board, signed and inscribed to "Mr. S. B. Chittenden, Jr by his Father S. B. Chittenden, Brooklyn, January 1883" on one of the front blank endpapers. The book, authored by one of Chittenden's friends, only identified in the preface with the printed signature, "E.C." is a compendium of some of Chittenden's speeches in Congress. The three volumes are complimented by a scrapbook kept by Chittenden's son containing news clippings and other family-related ephemera.

 

Simon Baldwin Chittenden was born in Guilford, Connecticut and began his mercantile career in New Haven before removing to New York in 1842. From 1867 to 1869 he served as vice president of the New York City Chamber of Commerce and in 1874 was elected as an Independent Republican to the House of Representatives, serving there until 1881.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
