5. Autograph Letter Signed "Mrs. Hattie Elstun." 1p, measuring 5" x 8", Medicine Lodge, Kansas, dated January 7, 1941. To an unknown recipient, inquiring about dealing an old land grant signed by Benjamin Harrison. The city's original site was used by the Kiowa people for the celebration of their annual sun dance in the summer of 1866, who considered it to be sacred due to the high content of Epsom salts in the river. John Hutchinson later settled the site in February 1873, but there were numerous Native raids in the region which caused residents and the state militia to construct a stockade.

Clinton Bowen Fisk (1828-1890) was a senior officer during Reconstruction in the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands and served as the Prohibition Party's presidential candidate during the 1888 presidential election. He helped establish the first free public schools in the Southern United States for white and African-American children, and in 1874 was appointed to the Board of Indian Commissioners by President Ulysses S. Grant.
