Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894) grew up in the eastern Massachusetts mill town and future clock-making center of Waltham. “Bobbin Boy Banks”, as the teenaged mill worker was nicknamed, had grand ambitions and continually improved himself through reading, orating, and debating. Banks was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served as Speaker of the House under the Pierce administration. Banks, then serving as 24th Governor of Massachusetts, resigned in 1861 after 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) named him a Major General of the Union Army. Lincoln’s appointment was purely political as Banks lacked any military training. This lack of experience quickly became apparent; Banks was shuttled from Virginia to New Orleans to Texas after a series of disastrous military blunders. After the war, Banks returned to politics.
