A letter addressed to Charles De Vinaldi stating that he is unable "to write you an article for this week... though your suggestions are appropriate enough I cannot well conform to them as it is impossible for me to write plainer than I have done. / Yours truly / N Lyon"

Nathaniel Lyon was the first Union general to be killed in the American Civil War and is noted for his actions in the state of Missouri at the beginning of the conflict.

Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861) was a veteran of the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars. Seven months after this letter was written, Lyon was made commander of the Union arsenal in St. Louis. He is credited with defeating the Missouri secessionist movement when on May 10, 1861 his troops surrounded pro-Confederate militias and forced their surrender. At the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861, Lyon was mortally wounded while rallying his vastly outnumbered troops. His death was widely mourned in the North; his brilliant work had done much to hold Missouri for the Union.
