Description:

Hawthorne Nathaniel

Partially printed manuscript document signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne. 13" x 8" on light blue watermarked paper. Dated "Dec. 2,  1853", and boldly signed by Nathaniel Hawthorne "Nath Hawthorne" as Consul to the United Stated of America, at the port of Liverpool. Hawthorne signed at the bottom of the document next to his affixed embossed seal. Additionally signed by Wm H. Townsend, Purser. Expected folds, light toning, Hawthorne's signature slightly smudged. Ex Norman Boas - Seaport Autographs, Ex- Christies.

A lovely rare example of Hawthorne's signature on a document ascertaining that certain goods have been landed in the Port of Liverpool by Rathbone Brothers on the vessel called the Atlantic originating from the port of New York:

"One case contg Five Hundred seventy dozen pairs Gloves.

One case contg Four hundred seventeen dozen pairs Gloves".

Although mostly noted as a novelist, publishing The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables among others, Nathaniel Hawthorne was rewarded with the position of United States Consul in Liverpool, a position he held from 1853 to 1857. A handsome example with a scarce vibrant signature.
