Napoleon & Battle of Eylau Rare Early-19th Century Peepshow - Where France Acquired its Taste for Horse Meat!

A peepshow, housed in its original box (8.75" x 6.5" x .5") bearing six hand-colored engraved panels. Entitled NAPOLEON and the battle at Eylau fought the 9th February, 1807 / NAPOLEON, et la battaille à Eylau donnée le 9 Février 1807 printed upon a pair of French tricolor flags which flank a small 1.25" x .75" window at the center which, when the top of the box is extended fully (about 28"), reveals a beautifully rendered three-dimensional battle scene. Napoleon appears on horseback (at left) in the third panel from the top. Although the outer box bears a good deal of wear including soiling and toning, the interior is as remarkably clean and bright as they day it was manufactured.

The Battle of Eylau was an enormous but inconclusive battle that took place between Napoleon's Grande Armée and the Russians in East Prussia. The two day battle involved over 150,000 soldiers and resulted in approximately 20,000-40,000 casualties between the two sides. Although the French won possession of the field at the end of the day, they had failed to destroy the Russian army. Riding over the fields the next morning, Marshal Ney remarked, "Quei massacre! Et sans Résultat" ("What a massacre! And without result!").

Incidentally, it was at the Battle of Eylau where the French acquired a taste for horse meat. Napoleon's surgeon-in-chief at the battle, Baron Dominique-Jean Larry, recommended dead battlefield horses to feed starving soldiers in the field.
