N.C. Wyeth ALS Showing His Excitement & Dedicated Work Ethic in the Midst of Painting

Two page signed and autographed letter by N.C. Wyeth to S.D. Green, 7" x 7.5". Penned on verso with rectos blank. Dated "March 31, 1924" and signed by Wyeth as "yours very sincerely, N.C. Wyeth". Near fine with expected folds and small paper clip rust marks to upper left corners.

This lovely note, written from his home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, demonstrates Wyeth's keen work ethic: the artist was returning correspondence at 4 am! His letter expresses a desire to comply with Green's request and found it encouraging. His letter is shown in full below:

"Chadds Ford/Pa

Mr S.D. Green,

Dear sir:

Your letter and request of March 17th has been read with very great interest. It is encouraging and stimulating to hear of such things.

Just at present 4am in the midst of work which has all but overwhelmed me and I must wait for a breathing space to comply with your request.

Rest assured I shall do it just as soon as possible.

Yours very sincerely,

N.C. Wyeth".

Wyeth, one of America's greatest illustrators, created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books. He was considered both a painter and an illustrator, who keenly understood the difference, and said in 1908, "Painting and illustration cannot be mixed—one cannot merge from one into the other".

He ultimately settled in Chadds Ford in 1908 to raise a family on 18 acres near the historic Brandywine battlefield. By now his commissions were coming in quickly. His hope had been that he would make enough money with his illustrations to be able to afford the luxury of painting what he wanted; but as his family and income grew, he found it difficult to break from illustration. By 1914, Wyeth loathed the commercialism upon which he became dependent, and for the rest of his life, he battled internally over his capitulation.

A fantastic letter perhaps suggesting that Green's words encouraged Wyeth to move beyond illustration art.
