Description:

A page from Muhammad Ali's lecture on the Nation of Islam signed in the text with a vintage "Muhammad"

Autograph Manuscript Signed "Muhammad" in text, 1 page, 8" x 5", [n.p., n.d., but c. 1964-early 1970s, being a page from a lecture he delivered on behalf of the Nation of Islam. The page bears two minor contemporary ink smudges, else fine condition.

The page reads in full: "with them, But the South is the blame for mistreating us the So Called Negroes, The Hon Elijah Muhammad is between life and death. And he have to say these things."

Ali attended his first Nation of Islam meeting in 1961 and soon became an intimate of Malcom X. In 1964 he formally joined the Nation, and its leader Elijah Muhammad anointed him Muhammad (one who is worthy of praise) Ali (fourth rightly guided caliph). Only a few weeks after he joined the Nation, Malcolm X broke to convert to mainstream Sunni, but Ali remained with the Nation (a move he cited as a major regret later in life). Citing his religious beliefs, he resisted the draft landing him in court.

The subsequent legal cases and appeals kept him out of boxing for some time, and he toured the country lecturing on Islam. In 1975 Ali left the Nation himself, turning, like Malcolm X, to Sunni Islam (he became an adherent of Sufism in 2005).
