Mother Teresa, born Anjeze Gonxhe Bajaxhiu, was of Albanian-Indian heritage. She entered Roman Catholic religious orders in the early 1930s and served most of her life as a missionary in India. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a worldwide religious organization which established orphanages, soup kitchens, schools, hospice, and hospitals for the underprivileged, societally abandoned, and dying. She won the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her work. Mother Teresa was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.
