Description:

Monroe & Kennedy Type I Photo Depicting His 1962 Birthday Party Just After the Famous Madison Square Garden Bash

An original Type I glossy, double-weight black and white silver print photograph, 7.5" x 7.5," personally owned by Cecil Stoughton, President Kennedy's White House photographer, with Stoughton's address sticker on the verso, being his own file example.

The first photo shows Marilyn Monroe seated and gazing at Diahann Carroll, and this is the photo we are selling.

The second photo shows the back of the item we are selling, with Stoughton’s return address label at the bottom. The third photo shows Marilyn as she appears when we zoom in on the photo we are selling.

The final photo is for reference only, and not an item that we are selling, which shows a composite of our photo and another photo taken at the same time, showing Kennedy watching Carroll perform, but also highlighting how the president was perfectly situated across the room from Marilyn; one can easily imagine their eyes locking at some point.

Provenance: From the Estate of Cecil Stoughton.

Marilyn Monroe made Kennedy's 45th birthday one of the most memorable in history. Monroe had been sewn into her sheer flesh-toned and rhinestone dress in order to sing a sultry rendition of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" in front of 15,000 people at Madison Square Garden. Less commonly known is the private reception that occurred just after the televised celebration at the New York apartment of Arthur Krim, head of United Artists. In the foreground is Diahann Carroll singing, and in the background is Marilyn Monroe, sitting with her head in her hand and watching her. If one looks closely, Marilyn is still wearing her famous flesh-toned, rhinestone dress. Also pictured are: entertainer Jack Benny; Ethel Skakel Kennedy; Patricia Kennedy Lawford; Jean Kennedy Smith; Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson; Steve Smith; Special Assistant to the President for Congressional Relations Larry O'Brien; Special Assistant to President Kenneth P. O’Donnell; Mayor of New York City Robert F. Wagner, Jr.; First Lady of New York City Susan Wagner; actor Peter Lawford; entertainer Jimmy Durante; White House Secret Service agents Floyd Boring and Bob Lilley.

Cecil William Stoughton (1920-2008) was an American photographer best known for being President John F. Kennedy's photographer during his White House years. Stoughton was present at the motorcade at which Kennedy was assassinated.
