Mohandas Gandhi: "I liked the strength and instinct...He is not in favor of justice" - Fantastic ALS!
ALS

Extraordinary three-page Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by Mohandas Gandhi, written in Gujarati on two slender slips of paper during his imprisonment at Yeravda Central Prison in Poona (now Pune), India. The document is composed in purple ink and remains entirely in Gandhi's distinctive hand. The final page bears a handwritten signature and the official stamp of the prison superintendent, confirming its origin. The document has been professionally translated into English by Honey Translation Services in Chennai, India. The certified English translation spans three typed pages and captures the original Gujarati message addressed to Bhai Shri Nanalal, discussing the contents and delivery of another letter, matters of justice, the repayment of money to sisters, and additional instructions. The letter shows signs of age-related toning and slight edge wear but remains intact, legible, and boldly signed. The letter measures 3.125" x 8.5".

In full:

"Bhai Shri Nanalal

Along with this, I am biding the letter of the Maganlal. The letter which I wrote to you yesterday, must be on the way for delivery.

I liked the strength and instinct of the Maganlal. He is not in favor of justice so you prepare to go. For further clarification, I have asked that whether you are in favor to declare all the writing. Please inform from your side do you agree?

I have no doubt that the money should be given to the sisters. I can understand that it cannot be paid right now. The sisters should also be paid the interest if the interest is not too high. If Ratilal is present there then there is no requirement of anyone else to be present.

Please extend it. I have informed Maganlal about that.

Now it won't be remembered but look for the names in the letters and make those names are exactly same. I request for that but it will be considered same whatever you take the decision. Further, I will write whenever I get more details.

Bapu's Blessings
Superintendent Yeravda Central Prison (Poona)"

"I liked the strength and instinct of the Maganlal. He is not in favor of justice so you prepare to go."
These lines reflect Gandhi's nuanced appraisal of individual character and hint at a decision-making process with legal and moral weight. Gandhi acknowledges Maganlal's determination and resolve but notes his deviation from Gandhi's principles of justice, prompting the recipient, Nanalal, to prepare for an impending action.

This letter was written during Gandhi's incarceration at Yeravda Central Prison, where he was held during several pivotal moments in the 1930s, including the Salt Satyagraha and the Civil Disobedience Movement. Gandhi's imprisonment during this time was a direct result of his nonviolent resistance against British rule. Yeravda became more than just a prison, it was a command center from which Gandhi continued to shape the national struggle, issue directives, and manage disputes within the movement.
