Description:

Moe Howard Comical ALS Re: Moe & Curly Joe Dolls, Fan Letters, & Complaint That "Larry can't be depended on to do anything"

A lengthy 2pp autograph letter signed by comedic entertainer Moe Howard (1897-1975), one of the founding members of the slapstick trio The Three Stooges, as "Moe" on the second page bottom. Howard has also signed his name an additional two times in the body of the letter when referring to "Moe dolls." July 12, 1966. [Beverly Hills, California.] Inscribed on either side of watermarked stationery featuring a cartoon vignette of The Three Stooges at upper right. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, else near fine. 8.5" x 11." Accompanied by its original transmittal envelope engrossed by Howard, bearing a similar cartoon logo as well as Howard's hand-stamped return address at upper left. With expected philatelic stamps and markings. Neatly letter-opened verso. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Daniel Cohen Autographs & Memorabilia (Hollywood, Television, Music) (Ontario, Canada) dated July 13, 2005.

Moe Howard wrote this affectionate letter to Linda Dill, a young pen pal from central Texas with whom Howard frequently corresponded. Howard makes some funny observations about fan mail and how it is handled (or not handled) by current members of The Three Stooges (Larry!) He also discusses potential future projects in movies and on television, as well as the appeal of another important revenue stream: The Three Stooges merchandise. Howard also refers in passing to his involvement as a cerebral palsy ambassador.

In part, with unchanged spelling:

"Finally returned home after being away for 93 days and believe me its just grand to be back home again. When I first arrived and saw the amount of mail waiting for me I felt like just going right out of town again…

Your Birthday, Anniversary and Fathers day cards were just terrific and I thank you for all of them. The dollar you sent for the cerebral palsied youngsters has been received and we all thank you so much. Your letter to the Editor was just first rate and of course… your colored snap of yourself with the Curly Joe + Moe Dolls was just great, incidentally I just received the Moe Doll hand carved from Mrs. Crump and it is terrific. I have it standing between the original Dolls you made of Curly, Larry + myself quite some time ago….

There are no definate plans for work at the moment. We are having a meeting next week to determine if we wish to work on a new motion picture, T.V. or personal appearance this Fall…

I still have about 60 fan letters to answer and enclose autographed pictures which is the balance of 312 of them… Curly Joe does a batch once in a while, but Larry can't be depended on to do anything. Well I guess I'll close for now and start Mary Crumps letter. Helen [Moe's wife, Helen Schonberger Howard] joins me in Love and best wishes to you all.

Fondly,
Moe."

Members of The Three Stooges included Moe, the bossy Stooge with the bowl haircut; Larry Fine (1902-1975), the wild-haired "Middle Stooge"; and alternating performances of the plump Stooge by either of Moe's real life brothers, Shemp Howard (1895-1955) and "Curly" Howard (1903-1952). Comedian Joe DeRita (1909-1993) filled the Shemp/Curly role after 1958, becoming "Curly Joe."
