Description:

Mississippi Slave DS Naming 14 Slaves Listed With Hogs and Cattle

Methodist minister Thomas Nixon (1793-1872), William M. Fairchild, and David Burns prepared this inventory of the estate of John Allen, which included fourteen slaves, four horses, a "lott" of both hogs and cattle, and a wide variety of household furniture and utensils.

In the records of the Probate Court, Henry H. Hudson, the second husband of Allen's widow and guardian for his children, reported that he rented out the slaves in the estate in 1835 for a total of $1,583, including three hired out for nothing (likely for food and shelter). In 1836, he rented them out for $1,829.

In 1837, Hudson hired out eleven of the slaves for amounts ranging from $1 for Christian to $291 for Shepherd. The total for the rental of the eleven slaves in 1837 was $1,874.12. By 1844, Hudson was still renting out seven of the slaves and making annual reports to the Probate Court. In 1850, he rented out the slave Charles on behalf of Allen's minor heir Ezra Allen for $125, and rented out Charles again in 1851 for $125. By 1853, all of Allen's children had reached "lawful age," and Hudson had paid to them all balances due them, so that the court could make a final settlement in August 1853, more than twenty years after John Allen's death.
