Mississippi Estate Pays Taxes on Land, Slaves, Watch, Carriage, and Pistols

This tax receipt for Adams County, Mississippi, acknowledges payment of $182.30 for the property of the estate of James H. McCoy, which included 3,000 acres of land, 101 slaves, 100 cattle, and such luxury items as a watch, a carriage, and two pistols. Other items of interest on the printed form, which McCoy did not own, include pianos, Bowie knives, sword canes, and Arkansas Tooth Picks (a heavy dagger with a pointed, straight blade).

Levi G. Harrison (1816-1858) was born in Natchez, Mississippi. In 1836, he married Margaret Munce (1815-1900), and they had at least two children. In 1850, he was a clerk in Natchez, Mississippi. He lived with his wife Margaret, two children, and his parents, and he owned $3,000 in real estate. In November 1853, Oren Metcalfe won election as sheriff of Adams County, Mississippi, and he appointed Harrison as his deputy. Harrison also served as a member of the Board of Visitors of the Natchez Institute, a position from which he resigned in November 1857.

James H McCoy (1810-1852) died before July 1852, and the probate court took fourteen years to finalize the settlement of his estate. Thomas Hall was the initial administrator of his estate.
