Description:

Fillmore Millard

Cream card stock signed and inscribed by 13th U.S. President Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) as “Millard Fillmore, Buffalo, March 26th 1872”. Handsome signature clip measures 4"x 2" and is in near fine condition. Mounting traces verso.

Millard Fillmore retired to Buffalo, New York after leaving the White House. There he married an affluent widow, played the socialite, and donated generously to many charitable causes, like the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. Fillmore’s status as Buffalo’s leading citizen was tested, however, when he supported non-punitive reconciliation with the South after 1864. This signed card dates from this post-presidency period.

The son of tenant farmers from western New York, Fillmore assumed the presidency after the death of his predecessor Zachary Taylor. Fillmore’s most enduring presidential legacy was his endorsement of the Compromise of 1850. This agreement, launched in a series of five bills by Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas, addressed issues like slavery and territorial expansion. Although the Compromise was hoped to resolve sectional conflicts over slavery, it would only delay the onset of the Civil War by a decade.
