Millard Fillmore Signed Letter Appointing Temporary Sec. of Treasury

1p of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 9.75", Washington, D.C., dated April 26, 1852. A letter signed "Millard Fillmore" detailing the need to temporarily replace the Secretary of the Treasury due to indisposition. Reading in full: "The Honorable Thomas Corwin, Secretary of the Treasury, being confined to his room by indisposition, I deem it necessary to authorize and do hereby authorize the Hon. Wm L. Hodge, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, to perform the duties of the said Secretary of the Treasury during the continuance of the indisposition of the said Secretary of the Treasury." With docketing on verso and accompanied by an engraving of Fillmore. The letter has flattened folds and mat burn at the edges. Boldly signed. The engraving has mounting residue at the top edge on verso.

Thomas Corwin (1794-1865) He represented Ohio in both houses of Congress and served as the 15th Governor of Ohio and the 20th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. President Fillmore had previously appointed William L. Hodge to be acting Secretary of the Treasury on February 21 and March 1 of this same year, and Hodge would go on in the future to serve as Acting Secretary of the Treasury on May 24, June 10, August 27, October 4, October 28, and December 31, 1852, as well as on January 15 and March 3, 1853. In such cases, Secretary Corwin was either absent, indisposed, or suffering from illness. During his tenure, Corwin was unsuccessful in passing much-desired legislation and retired as Secretary shortly after the end of Filmore's administration in early March 1853.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
