Fillmore Millard

Millard Fillmore Beautifully Signed Book, Register of all Officers and Agents

United States Official Register of all Officers and Agents, Civil, Military, and Naval in the Service of the United States, on the thirteenth of September, 1833. Published by the City of Washington, 1833. 267 pages. Black leather boards with raised bands to spine. Gilt ruling to front with gilt décor and titles to spine. Recased with the original materials laid back down. Replaced end papers, with front fly original and with a large bold signature of Millard Filmore as "M Fillmore / Buffalo / N.Y." Interior is clean with several pages to the front with light staining.

A most unique book, with an important signature, listing the names and compensations of all printers in any way employed by Congress, or any department, or officer or government. Inclusive of such lists of the individual's "Stations," "Where born," "Residence," and "Compensation." Beginning with the Executive branch of The President of the United States, Andrew Jackson of Tennessee, $25,000 per annum, and Vice President of the United States, Martin Van Buren, of New York, $5,000 per annum, and continues to the back of the book with the Postmasters indexed by name of the city, including each individuals compensation. Fascinating reading. To put President Jackson's compensation in today's dollars, his $25,000 in the year 1833 is equivalent in purchasing power to $675,800.00 in 2016, based on an average inflation index of 1.82% per year.

A fantastic unique example of Millard Fillmore's signature.
