Description:

Fillmore Millard

Millard Fillmore Signed and Inscribed Book Set: Egypt, Arabia Petra and the Holy Land.

Two volume set of books, Egypt, Arabia Petra and the Holy Land. Harper & Brothers, New York, 1860, Eleventh edition. Volume 1: 240pp, Volume 2: 286pp. 7.75" x 4.75". Signed by Millard Fillmore in FOUR places via dating and signing his wife's name to both inner front paste downs as "Caroline C. Fillmore, March 20, 1862" as well as having signed her name to each title page in the same manner "Caroline C. Fillmore, March 20, 1862".   Slight bleeding of the inscriptions on the front paste downs.

Lovely set of two books in brown cloth with copper titles to the spine and blind stamping to the front.  The binding is tight and square. Numerous lovely line drawing and one fold out map. A lovely set signed and dated in four places entirely in the hand of President Fillmore on behalf of his wife Caroline. This set of books came from the Fillmore's library. President Fillmore, always the ardent book collector and reader since childhood, often presented Caroline with books, in addition to carefully cataloguing both her and his collection. As is evidenced here he would sign her name on her behalf as establishing ownership and then catalogue them. This set was signed by President Fillmore for Caroline on the paste down and title pages of both books. Having researched and reviewed other scarce books owned by President Fillmore we find that there is most often a catalogue number identifier on the title page found at the top next to the signature which also may be in the hand of Millard Fillmore. This set was deaccessioned from the Buffalo and Erie County Historical library, the public library of which was co-founded by the Fillmores, and has the expected library stamp on the spine.
