Fillmore Millard 1800 - 1874

Millard Fillmore signature two years after the end of Civil War, attractively presented.

Cream stock card signed and inscribed by 13th U.S. President Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) as "Millard Fillmore, Buffalo, Sept. 30th, 1867" and handsomely displayed in a brown and white-trimmed beveled mat on foam core. An offset lithograph of the president appears above and a handwritten placard reading "Millard Fillmore, 13th President, 1850-1853" appears below. Signature clip measuring 3.25" x 2.125" is in near fine condition, with a few isolated stains to the bottom edge well outside of signature. Overall size is 10" x 13" including mat.

Millard Fillmore, the son of tenant farmers from western New York, served as our 13th president following the death of his predecessor Zachary Taylor (1784-1850). Fillmore's most enduring legacy was his endorsement of the Compromise of 1850. This agreement, launched in a series of five bills by Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas, addressed issues of slavery and territorial expansion. Although the Compromise was hoped to resolve sectional conflicts over slavery, it would only delay the onset of the Civil War by a decade.

Fillmore retired to Buffalo, New York after leaving the White House. There he actively engaged in elite society and donated generously to many charitable causes, like the fund for the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. Fillmore's status as Buffalo's leading citizen was tested, however, when he supported non-punitive reconciliation with the South after 1864. This signed card dates from this post-presidency period.
