Fillmore Millard 1800 - 1874 Millard Fillmore signature on card, with 19th C. provenance from Charles Francis Adams, grandson of John Adams and son of John Quincy Adams

Millard Fillmore (1800-1874), the son of tenant farmers from western New York, served as our 13th president following the death of his predecessor Zachary Taylor (1784-1850). Fillmore's most enduring legacy was his endorsement of the Compromise of 1850. This agreement, launched in a series of five bills by Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas, addressed issues of slavery and territorial expansion. Although the Compromise was hoped to resolve sectional conflicts over slavery, it would only delay the onset of the Civil War by a decade.
