The New York Central Railroad Company was a combination of ten New York railroad companies, unified by railroad owner Erastus Corning (1794-1872) in March 1853. The merger became the largest corporation in America at the time, and Corning served as president until 1865. The railroad was later bought out by Cornelius Vanderbilt. Caroline Fillmore (1813-1881) was Millard Fillmore's second wife; the couple married in 1858. During the late stages of her life, Caroline frequently changed her will, which resulted in numerous suits made by family members after her death.
