Description:

Fillmore Millard

Millard Fillmore Each Signed Set of 32 James Fenimore Cooper Books, from Fillmore's Personal Library, Includes the Last Of The Mohicans. Outstanding set with 32 signatures by Millard Fillmore!

W.A. Townsend And Company, 1861, New York. Cooper's Novels, With A Discourse on the Life, Genius, and Writings of the Author. By William Cullen Bryant. Illustrated from Drawings by F.O.C. Darley. New York.

Complete in 32 small volumes, each 6" x 8", with embossed brown cloth with vibrant gilt titles to the spine and front board. Frontis illustration of Fenmore Cooper and tissue guards present. Original end papers. Inscribed by President Millard Fillmore on each of the 32 volumes who both dated and signed his wife's name to front paste down as "Mrs. Millard Fillmore". (This inscription is effectually finding his signature within her name.) This set of books came from the Fillmore's library. President Fillmore, always the ardent book collector and reader since a child, often presented Caroline with books, in addition to carefully cataloguing both her and his collection. As is evidenced here he would sign her name on her behalf as establishing ownership and then catalogue her books. In addition, Caroline also signed and dated many of the volumes on the title page. Having researched and reviewed other scarce books owned by President Fillmore we find that there is most often a catalogue number identifier on the title page found at the top next to the signature which also may be in the hand of Millard Fillmore.  This set was deaccessioned from the Buffalo and Erie County Historical library, the public library of which was co-founded by the Fillmores, (and to which they donated much of their library), and as such has the expected library sticker on the spine.

Near fine clean condition set, with a superb important presence on the shelf; once owned by the Fillmores and containing President Fillmore's signature as described above found within each of the 32 volumes. Shown in the images are only a sampling of the all the signatures.
