A small but fine collection of cased photographs, including two daguerreotypes and two ambrotypes, for a total of four pieces featuring five different sitters. N.d. but mid-19th C. Three hand-written slips accompanying three of the photographs indicate New York state genealogical connections. None of the photographs were examined out of the cases. Individual condition issues will be discussed below, but overall condition is very good. The largest cased photograph measures 3.125" x 3.75" x .75."

The lot is comprised of:

1. A cased daguerreotype depicting a man wearing a pin-striped cravat contained in a black case embossed with foliate designs. The hinged case opens to reveal the daguerreotype at right, and a fancy red velvet cushion at left. No maker's mark. The cover glass and brass mat are intact. The case binding has split and the two halves are detached. Expected surface wear to the case covers including isolated loss. Ninth plate, or 2" x 2.25." The case measures 3.125" x 3.75" x .75" overall.

Accompanied by a paper slip pencil-inscribed: "Cornelius Hornbeck grandfather of Francella Taylor Oliver." Family genealogy actually reveals that Hornbeck was Francella's Oliver's maternal great-grandfather. Francella Taylor (1849-1940) is buried in Millerton, Dutchess County, New York.

2. A cased daguerreotype depicting a man wearing a fur cap and carrying a gold-tipped cane contained in a black case embossed with floral designs. The hinged case opens to reveal the daguerreotype at left, and a red silk cushion at right. No maker's mark. The cover glass, pebbled mat, and brass trim are intact. Expected surface wear to the case covers including isolated loss; the bottom of the left case frame is missing. The daguerreotype measures approximately 2.375" x 3." The case measures 3.125" x 3.75" x .625" overall.

Accompanied by a paper slip pencil-inscribed: "Joseph Oliver grandfather of Frank Oliver." Frank Oliver (1852-1940), spouse of the aforementioned Francella Taylor, is buried in Millerton, Dutchess County, New York.

3. A cased ambrotype depicting a man wearing a black cravat contained in a black case embossed with foliate designs. The hinged case opens to reveal the ambrotype at left, and a fancy red velvet cushion at right. No maker's mark. The cover glass and brass mat are intact. Expected surface wear to the case covers including isolated loss. The ambrotype measures approximately 1.5" x 2.125." The case measures 2.375" x 3" x .75" overall.

Accompanied by a paper slip pencil-inscribed: "Henry L Jennings grandfather of Frank Oliver." See genealogical note above.

4. A cased ambrotype depicting a couple, the man on the left and the woman on the right, contained in a black case embossed with foliate designs. The hinged case lacks a maker's mark. The cover glass and brass mats are intact. The case binding has split and the two halves are detached. Expected surface wear to the case covers including isolated loss. The ambrotypes measure approximately 1.5" x 2.125." The case measures 2.375" x 3" x .75" overall.

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
