During the Yankees' historic 1961 season, Mickey Mantle and team mate Roger Maris (dubbed the M & M Boys) attempted to break Babe Ruth's single-season home run record. Not only did Maris accomplish this, but the Yankees also defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series that year. In January 1961, Mantle had become the highest-paid baseball player in the league, with a salary of $75,000 (or around $634,000 in 2019 currency.) He was at the peak of his celebrity.

Mickey Mantle served as 1st baseman and center fielder for the New York Yankees between 1951-1968. Mantle was lauded not only for his batting accuracy, but also for his record-breaking batting distances. The slugger was a multiple times MVP, All-Star, World Series champion, batting champion, and home run leader. He was induced into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.
