Mickey Mantle joined up with career journalist Mickey Herskowitz to write All My Octobers: My Memories of 12 World Series when the Yankees Ruled Baseball (HarperCollins Publishers, New York: 1994). The 224pp book has twelve chapters, each profiling one of the World Series that Mantle and Yankees teammates participated in: 1951-1953, 1955-1958, 1960-1964. Featuring 16 pages of black and white photographs, several appendices including baseball statistics and Mantle's recommended reading list, and an introduction by longtime NBC sportscaster Bob Costas.

The book provides the basic outlines of Mantle's biography, from his childhood in Dust Bowl Oklahoma to his recent treatment for alcohol dependence, but focuses on his World Series experiences. Fundamentally, "This is a book about the World Series, and the dozen I played in, and what that excitement and those times were like" (197).

Of especial interest to baseball fans will be Mantle's numerous references to famous players and coaches, such as Casey Stengel, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Roger Maris, Jackie Robinson, Yogi Berra, Don Larsen, and others. In Chapter 9, "The M & M Boys," Mantles describes "the race within the race … the great Ghost Story of baseball's exploding summer [1961]. No one could have predicted a season so loaded with controversy or commotion or an irony so thick you could choke on it." (129). Insights such as these, along with a plethora of comical and bittersweet anecdotes, form the crux of the book.

All My Octobers was published during a very difficult period in Mickey Mantle's life. He finished the book in February 1994, after receiving treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic for alcoholism the previous month. The following month, his third son Billy died of heart complications related to substance abuse at age 36. Mantle died the following year, two months after an unsuccessful liver transplant.

Mickey Mantle (1931-1995) served as 1st baseman and center fielder for the New York Yankees between 1951-1968. Mantle was lauded not only for his batting accuracy, but also for his record-breaking batting distances. The slugger was a multiple times MVP, All-Star, World Series champion, batting champion, and home run leader. He was induced into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.

An incredible biography of Mickey Mantle, signed by "The Mick" himself!
