Description:

Meyer & Teddy Lansky 1973 Phone Book with Mob Contacts

An original phone book belonging to Meyer and Thelma "Teddy" Lansky, which has been filled out entirely in Teddy's hand. Originally formatted as a day planner for the year 1973, the book has been repurposed as a phone book, with the majority of entries written between the tabbed months of January-June. Contained within are the names of Lansky's closest friends and relatives, as well as countless others worthy of additional research. Another, similar address book sold in our November 2022 auction for $3,000. Exhibits expected toning and minor creasing from evident use, with areas of soiling from metal-coiled spine. Very good overall, offering an intriguing inside look into the close personal contacts of one of the most notorious mobsters of the 20th century. Provenance: The Thelma Lansky Estate. 5" x 8".

Features the contact information for key Lansky contacts, including:

• Buddy Lansky: Meyer's son, written simply as "Buddy"

• Esther Chess: Meyer's sister

• Morris Kleinman: Jewish Cleveland gangster who was part owner of the Desert Inn Hotel in Las Vegas

• Jack Lansky: Meyer's brother

• Sandra Lombardo: Meyer's daughter

• Moe Polakoff: Famed lawyer who represented notorious underworld figures including Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky

• Ben Siegelbaum (Bugsy Siegel): Close friend and associate of Lansky. Identified in numerous sources as one of Lansky's main couriers for illegal money

• Richard Schwartz: Meyer's stepson who was shot and killed in 1977

• Joe Varon: Famed lawyer who represented notorious underworld figures including Meyer Lansky, Vincent "Jimmy Blue Eyes" Alo, and Joe Adonis

Meyer Lansky (1902-1983), also known as the "Mob's Accountant", was an American organized crime figure who, along with his associate Charles "Lucky" Luciano, was instrumental in the development of the National Crime Syndicate in the United States. Lansky married his second wife, Thelma "Teddy" Schwartz (1907-1997) in 1948, remaining together until his death in 1983. Despite her marriage to a legendary mob figure, Teddy would remain largely out of the public eye. She lived quietly in a Miami Beach apartment both before and after her husband's death, maintaining ignorance on Lansky's business dealings on account of never asking what he did for a living. This book was likely filled in by Teddy in the months following the couple's return from Israel, during which time Lansky attempted to evade charges of tax evasion.
