Meyer Lansky (1902-1983). Type I photograph of "The Mob's Accountant" Meyer Lansky with his wife (on left) Teddy Lansky (1907-1997) and possibly his daughter Sandra Lansky (1938-2023) on the right. Photo printed on Kodak paper measuring 5" x 3.5" encased in a 7.25" x 4" PSA protective plastic slab, n.p. circa 1960s. Marked 178 in red ink on the back, else fine.

Meyer Lansky was a known member of the Jewish mafia, who became "The Mob's Accountant" of the National Crime Syndicate and operated casinos in Las Vegas, Miami, and notably in Cuba before Castro's Revolution. Lansky was a close associate of other mob figures Bugsy Seigel and Charles "Lucky" Luciano, both of whom he met in his youth on the Lower East Side of New York City. He held considerable sway with the Italian Mafia and with Luciano he played an integral role in the creation of the National Crime Syndicate that combined the powers of the various ethnic mafias in 1929. His clever criminal accounting advancements included the introduction of offshore banking and money laundering in the 1930s. During World War II Lansky diverted his attention from his usual mobster activities to help fight Nazis at home in NYC; he and his gang were known to break up pro-Nazi rallies organized by the German-American Bund. The U.S. Navy even enlisted Lansky and his associates to protect warships being built in New York Harbor from sabotage by Nazi sympathizers. After the war, Lansky focused on running casinos, particularly in Cuba, which were then confiscated by the Communist government after the Cuban Revolution took place in 1959. Lansky then tried to flee to Israel but was barred from settlement because of his criminal background and was forced to return to the United States where he faced trial for federal tax evasion. He was acquitted in 1973. He died in 1983 of lung cancer, leaving behind a widow - his second wife Thelma "Teddi" Lansky whom he is pictured with in this photo (on left) - as well as three children from his previous marriage (to Anna Citron) including Sandra "Sandi" Lansky whom it is believed is pictured on the right of the photo.
