Meschech Weare and John Langdon Superb Signed Broadside 1778

Broadside, 1p, 7.25" x 11", Dover, October 31, 1778. Signed by Meschech Weare as president, "MWeare", and John Langdon as speaker, "John Langdon". Endorsement at verso. Flattened folds; remnants of previous mounting at verso; scattered foxing and toning; else, in near fine condition.

A call to election to the Selectmen of Dover, New Hampshire, "to notify the legal Inhabitants paying Taxes in the Town of Dover...to elect Two Persons...to represent them...and to empower such Representative for the Term of one Year...to transact such Business...as they may judge necessary for the public Good."

Meshech Weare (1713-1786) was an American farmer, lawyer, and revolutionary statesman who served as the first president of New Hampshire from June 1776 to June 1785. The title "president of New Hampshire" was changed to "governor of New Hampshire" during the term of Josiah Bartlett (1729-1795), who served from 1790 to 1794, though the office itself remained the same.

John Langdon (1741-1819) was a politician and a Founding Father of the United States. He served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, signed the United States Constitution, and was one of the first two United States senators from New Hampshire. Langdon was Weare's successor, serving as president, then governor, of New Hampshire for four terms.

In January 1776, New Hampshire became the first of the British North American colonies to establish an independent government and state constitution; six months later, it signed the United States Declaration of Independence and contributed troops, ships, and supplies in the war against Britain. Meschech Weare played an interesting part in the rebellion. As one of the judges in the Pine Tree Riots of 1772, Weare found the defendants guilty of harvesting the King's forest of white pine trees. He imposed such light fines for the act that other rebels were encouraged, and it is believed the riot helped to inspire the Boston Tea Party.
