Mercury 7 Astronauts! Superb & Iconic Signed Photograph, With Zarelli LOA
SP
A gorgeous color portrait photograph of all seven Mercury Project astronauts in silver space suits and helmets, featuring the signatures of all seven astronauts on the photo mat. N.d., n.p. The semi-matte color photograph is mounted via photo corners to a vintage chipboard mat board and has not been examined separately. The front of the mat featuring the signatures has become detached but is included, and exhibits light but even toning and mat burn. The mat backing has some surface loss along the top which is completely concealed when the mat front is returned to position. Else near fine. The actual size of the photograph is 6.875" x 5." The overall size of the mat is 8.875" x 7.5." Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity by Zarelli Space Authentication (Ballston Lake, New York), submission number Z008046, dated January 31, 2025.

The United States launched its Mercury Project between 1958-1963 in order to compete with Soviet advances in space exploration during the Cold War-era Space Race. The Mercury Project accomplished many firsts. Its program participants, called the Mercury 7, included (in the order of this official NASA portrait originally taken in July 1960), from front row, left to right: Walter M. Schirra, Jr.; Donald K. Slayton; John H. Glenn, Jr.; and M. Scott Carpenter; and from back row, left to right: Alan B. Shepard, Jr.; Virgil I. Grissom; and L. Gordon Cooper, Jr. Interestingly, in this case, the order of the signatures does not follow the visual order of the astronauts.

The signatures include, from the first line, left to right, and then from the bottom line, left to right:

- Alan B. Shepard, Jr. (1923-1998), signed in blue ink as "Alan B. Shepard Jr.," the first American in suborbital space.

- M. Scott Carpenter (1925-2013), signed in black ink as "Scott Carpenter," the second American to orbit Earth.

- Donald "Deke" K. Slayton (1924-1993), signed in blue ink as "DK Slayton," later served as NASA Chief of the Astronaut Office.

- John H. Glenn, Jr. (1921-2016), signed in black ink as "JA Glenn, Jr.," the first American to orbit Earth during the February 20, 1962 Friendship 7 mission.

- L. Gordon Cooper (1927-2004), signed in black ink as "Gordon Cooper," the astronaut who piloted the longest and last Mercury flight.

- Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom (1926-1967), signed in black ink as "Gus Grissom," the second American in space, killed during pre-flight preparations for Apollo I in 1967.

- Walter M. Schirra, Jr. (1923-2007), signed in blue ink as "WM Schirra," who orchestrated the first space rendezvous.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
