Description:

Menachem Begin TLS "Unfortunately, the withdrawal settlement has become a political fact" Just 12 Days After The Agreement Providing "for the Israeli withdrawal from Egypt"

Typed Letter Signed "M. Begin" in Hebrew, as a Member of the Knesset, 1 page, 6.5" x 8". The Knesset [Jerusalem], September 16, 1975. On Knesset stationery headed by Israel's Coat of Arms. To David Avni, Jerusalem. Begin was a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Two file holes in blank right margin. Fine condition.

In full: "There is no need to thank me for responding to your letter: it is my duty. Unfortunately, the withdrawal settlement has become a political fact. We need to know that in the near future we will find ourselves placed before pressure to have additional withdrawals. Therefore, there is no escaping the main concern of the future. May we continue, in the New Year, to serve our nation in a faithful manner. Wishing you and your family a happy holiday season." September 6th was Rosh Hashanah 5736.

Continuously serving in the Knesset since the 1st Knesset in 1949, Menachem Begin was now a member of the new Likud Party which he had cofounded in 1973 in an alliance with his Herut Party and several right-wing and liberal parties. The landslide victory of Likud in 1977 made Begin Prime Minister, the first Israeli Prime Minister who was not a member of the left-wing Mapai/Labor Party.

The Interim Agreement between Israel and Egypt was signed on September 4, 1975, 12 days before Begin wrote his letter. "The agreement is pursuant to the 1974 separation-of-forces agreement following the Yom Kippur War. It provides for the Israeli withdrawal in Sinai to the eastern ends of the Mitla and Gidi Passes, creation of a UN-monitored buffer zone in the evacuated area, turning of the previous buffer zone into Egyptian territories and Israeli withdrawal from the oil fields at Abu Rudeis and Ras Sudar." --- UN website.

Begin's statement "We need to know that in the near future we will find ourselves placed before pressure to have additional withdrawals" was prophetic. On March 26, 1979, now Prime Minister, Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed a Peace Treaty which included "annexes concerning Israeli withdrawal and security arrangements." The 1978 Nobel Peace Prize was shared by Begin and Sadat "for their contribution to the two frame agreements on peace in the Middle East, and on peace between Egypt and Israel, which were signed at Camp David on September 17, 1978" which resulted in the March 26, 1979, Peace Agreement.
