Description:

Menachem Begin SPs Commemorating Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty

Two glossy black and white images, each signed by 6th Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin (1913-1992) as "M. Begin." N.d., n.p. The larger item is a contemporaneous press photograph, pencil-inscribed "10 August 1977" verso. The smaller item is a postcard reproducing the front page of "The Jerusalem Post" announcing the signing of the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty. Both pieces testify to the extensive diplomatic groundwork that was laid in advance of the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty, when world leaders like Begin participated in a long process of mediation and negotiation before the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was formally signed in March 1979. This groundwork included shuttle diplomacy missions undertaken by U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, and more famously, the Camp David Accords.

The lot consists of:

1. A photograph depicting Prime Minister Menachem Begin addressing guests at a state dinner in Chagall Hall in the Knesset in Jerusalem in August 1977. Recognizable guests in the photograph are Moshe Dayan (1915-1981), then serving as Israeli Foreign Minister, seated at Begin's right; and U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance (1917-2002), at Begin's left. The remarkable backdrop, visible in part behind the speakers, was the central panel of Marc Chagall's trio of Gobelins tapestries decorating the fourth floor of the Knesset; the panel entitled "The Exodus" depicts remarkable events in Jewish history. The photograph is pencil-inscribed with notations and date verso. Expected wear including gentle wrinkles. A sheet of tracing paper is adhered to the reverse. 9.5" x 7.125."

The Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Premier Menachem Begin on March 26, 1979 was only the culmination of years of efforts to broker a lasting peace. Cyrus Vance visited the Middle East (specifically Alexandria and Jerusalem) from August 1-12, 1977 to further negotiations between the two leaders.

The Camp David Accords, signed on September 17, 1978, resulted in the development of two treaties, "A Framework for Peace in the Middle East," and "A Framework for the Conclusion of a Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel." The two weeks of geopolitical soul-searching spent at Camp David, Maryland paved the way for the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty.

2. A postcard reproducing the front page of the March 27, 1979 issue of "The Jerusalem Post," headlined "Israel and Egypt sign peace treaty declaring end to 30-year state of war." Blank verso. Expected light wear, else near fine. 4.625" x 6.625."

Menachem Begin served as Israeli Prime Minister between 1977-1983.
