Menachem Begin Asks for Donations To Support the Yeshiva Run by Rabbi Aryeh Levin, Known as "Father of the Prisoners"

Typed Letter Signed "M. Begin" as Member of the Knesset, 1 page, 8.5" x 11". Jerusalem, Israel, The Knesset, February 26, 1958. In Hebrew with full English translation. Carbon sent to six recipients, signed in ink. Two file holes in blank right margin. Fine condition.

Menachem Begin served in the first ten Israeli Knessets, the ninth and tenth as Prime Minister. When he wrote this letter, he was a member of Knesset 3, in the Herut Movement parliamentary group, a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Addressed to: "Management of the Center for the Freedom Movement (Herut), Executive Committee of the National Workers Organization (Histradut), Center of the Health Fund for National Workers, Management of 'Shelach', Management of the company 'Shelah' National Workers Organization, Management of 'Labor Center' National Workers Organization."

In full, "As you know, our eminent rabbi, Rabbi Aryeh Levin, Father of the Prisoners, has a yeshiva in his house. The yeshiva is supported and kept by donations from the Rabbi's friends and admirers. I have been told that the yeshiva is experiencing financial hardship, and in order to enable its proper and regular existence, I herewith turn to you to donate funds in a monthly amount of 50.-Israeli lirot, for the benefit of maintaining the yeshiva. Our friend, Mr. Abraham Axelrod, has taken upon himself to coordinate this operation. Please transfer the above mentioned amount to him, every month. And reward for a mitzvah - is a mitzvah.

Recipient's name is penned in Hebrew at top. Notation in ink at bottom in unknown hand, in Hebrew: "250 One time.

"Rabbi Aryeh Levin (1885-1969) was an Orthodox rabbi called "Father of Prisoners" for his visits to members of the Jewish underground imprisoned in the Central Prison of Jerusalem in the Russian Compound during the British Mandate. During the British Mandate period, part of the Nikolai Pilgrims Hospice in the Russian Compound was used as police headquarters and as government offices. Later, it was the British intelligence headquarters, blown up twice in 1945 by the Irgun, the Jewish underground led by Menachem Begin.
