Description:

Purvis Melvin 1903 - 1960 Melvin Purvis signed check, 9 years after his infamous manhunts for Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd and Baby Face Nelson, Slabbed PSA/NDA 8

Signed and dated check, drawn from the First National Bank in Kalamazoo, Michigan to "Walter J. Peer", dated "February 18, 1943", and boldly signed by Melvin H. Purvis as "Melvin H. Purvis", 8.25" x 3", with red bleed through from the cancellation stamps on verso. Slabbed and graded by PSA/DNA as NM - MT 8.

Purvis's FBI career had him leading the manhunts that tracked outlaws Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd, and most famously John Dillinger, which ended in Chicago on July 22, 1934. However, after Purvis became a media figure for this feat, Hoover claimed that Purvis had been demoted and agent Samuel p. Cowley had been put in charge of the Dillinger case. Cowley was later shot by Baby Face Nelson, and Purvis visited him in the hospital shortly before he died. Purvis was praised for his actions. He reportedly incurred the wrath of Hoover, who had previously supported him, as Purvis sought and achieved publicity for his own role, overshadowing Hoover and the rest of the FBI.

Purvis joined the Bureau of Investigation in 1927 and resigned in 1935. A wonderful piece of memorabilia from the bygone era of infamous gangsters.

Slabbed and graded by PSA/DNA as NM - MT 8.
