McKinley & Roosevelt 1900 Campaign Poster: "McKinley Was Right" - Monumental, 34" x 48"!
Campaign poster
A splendid piece of political ephemera, "McKinley Was Right." The lithographed campaign poster by Edwards, Deutsch & Heitmann (Chicago, Illinois) promoted the 1900 presidential reelection campaign of 25th U.S. President William S. McKinley (1843-1901), and his new vice president and running mate Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919). 1900. Chicago, Illinois. Printed "Copyright 1900 by Perry S. Heath, Sec'ty National Republican Committee Chicago" at lower right, and printed "Edwards Deutsch & Heitmann / Lithographers Chicago / American Union Label" at lower left. Expected wear including even toning, flattened folds, and some small holes located along the central horizontal fold. Edge chips, wrinkles, and small closed tears, with a repaired tear at the right edge, and a small area of loss near the lower right corner. Scattered pencil inscriptions recto and verso, with minor foxing verso. Else near fine. Of truly monumental size, measuring approximately 34.5" x 48.25" unfolded. An inscription "Cone on Podium" located verso suggests this poster would have been displayed at the focal point of a large venue. Double elephant folio. Folded to an approximate size of 12" x 25."

The campaign poster "McKinley Was Right" depicts McKinley and Roosevelt in heroic scale at the center, with McKinley's figure measuring about 30" in height alone. McKinley carries a broadside emblazoned "The Real Issue" in his right hand, reproducing a quote from an August 12, 1896 speech in which he lobbied for keeping wealth in the United States (rather than distributing it abroad, as his Democratic opponent William Jennings Bryan proposed to do.) McKinley's left hand gestures to a group of joyful and celebrating workers, who live in the sunlit future world of "Prosperity" in 1900. Behind the waving American flag and beyond Roosevelt's shoulder, observers can see the darkness and inactivity of the pre-McKinley era in 1896, entitled "Poverty" and "Depression."

McKinley would defeat William Jennings Bryan in the presidential election of 1900. He served as president between 1897 and his assassination in September 1901. The firm Edwards, Deutsch & Heitmann - who as we know produced this McKinley campaign poster - also issued a posthumous commemorative lithograph entitled, "His Last Words: 'God's Will, Not Ours, Be Done,'" showing McKinley, the First Lady, and the president's mother.
