President McKinley writes to Joseph McKenna, Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court, concerning Associate Justice Edward Douglas White serving on the Peace Commission ending the Spanish-American War: "It is of the greatest importance that Justice White should accept place on Peace Commission / William McKinley".

The Treaty of Paris was an agreement, signed on December 10, 1898, made between the United States and Spain that formally ended the Spanish American War. President McKinley appointed the American commissioners to attend the peace talks. As he wrote to Associate Justice Joseph McKenna, McKinley hoped to have Justice Edward Douglas White serve on the commission. White declined to serve, however.

Joseph McKenna (1843-1926), a U.S. congressman from California, was appointed by Attorney General by McKinley in 1897 and then to the U.S. Supreme Court a year later. He served on the court from 1898 until 1925.

Edward Douglass White Jr.(1845-1921), was appointed as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1894 and became the ninth Chief Justice of the United States in 1910, serving in that capacity until 1921.

By the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898, Spain relinquishing nearly all of the remaining Spanish Empire, especially Cuba, and ceding Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States. It marked the beginning of the age of the United States as a world power.
