Máximo Gómez LS Dated 4 Months Before His Death & 6 Months Before His Correspondent's Death
LS

A 1p letter in Spanish signed by Máximo Gómez (1836-1905), then the retired Generalissimo of the Cuban Army, as "M. Gomez" near the bottom. February 7, 1905. Havana, Cuba. Secretarially inscribed on laid mourning stationery. The inner and outer leaves are blank. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, some well-worn, and with tiny closed tears affecting some folds. Scattered ghost ink impressions and stains not affecting legibility. Else near fine. 5" x 8.125."

This letter was addressed to Eduardo Yero (1852-1905), then the Secretary of Public Instruction in the newly formed Cuban cabinet. The letter mentions one "Dr. Eduardo Cortes" on lines 7 and 8, which may yield more clues once translated.

Sadly, both the author Máximo Gómez and his correspondent Eduardo Yero would be dead before the year was out. Máximo Gómez died on June 17, 1905 at age 68. Eduardo Yero, who had served as the Cuban Secretary of the Interior before overseeing the educational ministry, died of cancer on August 26, 1905. Yero's obituary in contemporary American newspapers noted that Yero had first developed disfiguring cancerous growths on his face four years prior to his death.

Máximo Gómez was born in the present day Dominican Republic. After declaring his allegiance to the Cuban independence movement in the late 1860s, Gómez became one of the revolution's most potent military commanders. Gómez's terrifying military tactics - which included guerilla warfare, scorched earth, and legendary "machete charges" - proved a powerful psychological weapon against Spanish forces.
