Maurice Sendak: Two Nutcracker Proof Sheets, Taiwanese

Two large sheets, both measuring 39.5" x 27.5", No place [Taiwan], undated. A set of two printer proofs for "Nutcracker." Both have three illustrations" a large close up of the Nutcracker's face, dated March 2, 1983, an island scene dated August 6, 1983, and a group of Nutcracker characters labeled and dated June 7, 1983. The whole sheet is marked "A.P.O.C. Crown 1" and each is signed "Pizzi". One is labeled at the edge "R.400 MATT SATING GR 150", while the other is labeled "GARDAPAT BRILLANTE GR 150." Both have a color bar down one margin. All text is in Japanese and Sendak's signatures are printed under each illustration. The sheets have been stored rolled and have minor toning and soiling at the edges. With small tears at the edges and mounting tape remnants on verso.

In 1979, Kent Stowell, the choreographer for the Pacific Northwest Ballet, contacted illustrator Maurice Sendak (1928–2012) about collaborating on a ballet production of "The Nutcracker". Sendak was not interested until reading the original story by Hoffmann, and he set about creating a new version of the ballet that honored Hoffmann, Tchaikovsky, "and ourselves." The ballet opened in December 1983 to great acclaim, and Sendak's original set drawings were enhanced for a book version that was published in 1984. The large image of the Nutcracker's face was meant as a design for the original show curtain.
