Maurice Sendak SB Comically Impersonating Fellow Illustrator Maxfield Parrish!
SB

A first edition hardcover copy of Coy Ludwig, "Maxfield Parrish" (New York: Watson-Guptill Publications, 1975), signed and inscribed by beloved children's book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) on the first front loose endpaper as: "for Michael - / with Very Best Wishes! / Maxfield Parrish - / oh! / and a Merry Christmas -." Stated third printing, 1975. Teal binding with yellow titles, and lavishly illustrated with 64 color plates and an additional 100+ black and white figures. The unclipped original dust jacket shows a $25 retail price. Expected wear including isolated minor foxing affecting some pages within, as well as the inside of the dust jacket. Both the book and the dust jacket have a few scuffs and minor shelf rubbing, else near fine. 12-223pp with a Chronology, Foreword, List of Color Plates, Catalog of Selected Works, Index, Bibliography and more. 9.375" x 12.375" x 1.125."

Sendak's comical impersonation of American illustrator and painter Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) on the front endpaper is not as puzzling as it first appears. The pair were both extremely talented American illustrators, and Maurice Sendak had written the introduction for a small volume entitled "The Maxfield Parrish Poster Books" (New York: Harmony Books, 1974). Maxfield Parrish was a classically trained artist who was known for his luminous and stylized illustrations. Parrish's vibrantly colored and visually dramatic illustrations for children's books, calendars, advertisements, magazine covers, and greeting cards could very well have influenced Sendak's own work.

Maurice Sendak was an award-winning children's book illustrator and author. Always interested in design, Sendak began his career by illustrating comic books and designing toy company shop windows. "Where The Wild Things Are" was followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside Over There" (1981).
