Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak Original Sketch of Rosie For 1975 Animated Special
Signed art

An original pencil sketch study by Maurice Sendak on yellow tracing paper, created for the CBS animated special "Really Rosie" (1975). 1p, measuring 10.75" x 6.5" (sight), n.p., ca. 1974. Signed by Sendak at lower center right and annotated in the bottom left, "Note: sharp line along Rosie's hair line narrows her face". Matted and framed to an overall size of 14.75" x 11.75". Light overall toning with minor creasing throughout; not examined outside of frame. Else, very good to near fine.

Provenance: Property from the Collection of Justin G. Schiller, co-author of "Maurice Sendak: A Celebration of the Artist and His Work" (New York, 2013). The present work is featured on page 126, and was previously exhibited at the Society of Illustrators, "Maurice Sendak, Genius of American Picture Books Exhibition and Sale," April 1-July 10, 2021.

"Really Rosie" aired on CBS as a half-hour animated TV special on February 19, 1975. It was directed by Maurice Sendak and featured singer Carole King as the voice of the title character. The musical is based on Sendak's books "Chicken Soup with Rice", "Pierre", "One was Johnny", "Alligators All Around" (which comprised the 1962 Nutshell Library), and "The Sign on Rosie's Door" (1960). It naturally follows Rosie, the self-proclaimed sassiest kid on her block, as she entertains her friends by directing and starring in a movie based on her life.
