Description:

Maurice Sendak ALS Re: Art Trade for Mickey Mouse Obsession

Two autograph letters signed on postcards. One dated "June 12, 1967" having been mailed from London, the other dated "July 12, 1962', having been mailed from Spain. Both lightly creased with nicks, and small stains. Each about 4" x 6". This lot will also include a framed signed Christmas Card from Ramon Novarro, Star of "Ben-Hur". Ex. The Estate of Jan Wahl.

Important association letters between Maurice Sendak and Jan Wahl who had both a business as well as a personal relationship and communicated with regularity. The postcard from London has an important revealing reference of Sendak's obsession with Mickey Mouse "…I would like to buy the Mickey original - a trade - lets wait + see …" Maurice also lets Jan know that he will be in Fire Island July + August.

Sendak had a profound and well known connection to "the mouse". He had an extensive collection of Mickey Mouse memorabilia with such examples as a German Mickey wind-up toy with moving mouth, and a German crank toy of two dancing Mickey litho figures, a rare French cast iron Mickey Mouse bank, Mickey Mouse club buttons, a Mickey English car hood ornament, a cowboy Mickey doll, and Mickey on skis, Mickey figures playing the saxophone and banjo, a Mickey block set, clock, purse, china items and assorted toys-- even a book of original Mickey Mouse art the Disney company gave to Sendak in 1988. His collection was extremely extensive, (and expensive!) and Sendak was known to have traded his original art for Mickey originals (this important  and rare reference is shown in one of these post cards offered here). Later Maurice even created a limited edition color poster of himself staring into a full length mirror only to see a full size image of Mickey Mouse waving back. Sendak's unabashed love of Mickey was not a secret. However it is quite unique to read about his buying passion and art trading in a postcard.

Included is a framed signed Christmas card from Ramon Novarro to Cecil Everly who was Novarro's lover in London 1935 "My Dear Cecil, Many thanks for your letter, all is well, yes, I could read it very well, many thanks!. R / Love Ramon". Framed to 5.5" x 10.25'

A fantastic set with rare revealing content and a great association!
