Matthew Arnold ALS Re: "The Youth's Companion"

A 1p autograph letter signed by British writer Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), as "Matthew Arnold" at lower right. May 23, 1885. N.p. Written on a leaf of cream stationery blind-embossed with an Athenaeum Club seal at the top. Expected wear including minor paper folds and a few scuffs, else near fine. Probably bifold paper originally, but now a single leaf. 4.5" x 7."

Matthew Arnold had been invited by Perry Mason & Company, the Boston-based publishers of "The Youth's Companion," to contribute some of his literary work.

Arnold wrote in reply in full:

"May 23rd. 1885.

Dear Sirs

Your offer is a kind and liberal one; but my occupations and engagements are such that I see no prospect of my being able to write for your 'Youth's Companion.'

Truly yours
Matthew Arnold.

Messr. Perry Mason + Co."

"The Youth's Companion" was a popular children's magazine in circulation since 1827. Towards the latter quarter of the nineteenth century, "The Youth's Companion" transitioned from a magazine exclusively devoted to young readers, to a wider, family audience of mixed children and adult readers. The magazine actively courted popular authors such as Emily Dickinson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington, Jack London, Willa Cather, Winston Churchill, and as we know--Matthew Arnold--in the hopes that they would contribute to the magazine.

Matthew Arnold was a well-regarded Victorian poet, sage writer, essayist, and professor. He also served as an Inspector of Public Schools between 1851-1886. Arnold's reputation as a scholar ensured his place at the Athenaeum Club. Located on Pall Mall Street at Waterloo Place in London, the Athenaeum Club was founded in 1824 as a private men's club of primarily intellectual members. It opened to female members in 2002.
