Massive Charles Lindbergh "America First" Poster, Cancelled Event After Pearl Harbor
Poster
A 2-sheet poster for Charles Lindbergh's "America First" address which would ultimately never come to pass. Both sheets measure 28.75" x 45", with the two together measuring 57.5" x 45", Boston, December 12, [1941]. Printed by the Buck, Printing Co., Boston. A massive advertisement for an appearance by Lindbergh, U.S. Senator Gerald P. and others at Boston Barden for "New England United Against War." The poster sheets have flattened folds with small separations. Additional creasing and wear to the corners and edges. Staining, soiling, and dampstaining scattered throughout. Some ink ghosting from where the sheet was folded. Still with bright colors and attractive for display.

Charles Lindbergh had already become an American icon after his historic flight from New York to Paris in 1927. However, by 1941, he began touring the U.S. as the leading voice of the America First Committee — a group of some 800,000 members that advocated for isolationism and claimed England was trying to drag America into a war that should be avoid. Controversially, the group was also known for the anti-Semitic and pro-fascist views of some of its most prominent members, including Lindbergh himself. After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, the Committee canceled the rally with Lindbergh at Boston Garden "in view of recent critical developments," and the organization ultimately announced their support of the war effort.
