Poem
Revolutionary War. Manuscript, "Mass'ts Magazine May 27, 1783", 3pp on a leaf of bifold paper measuring 9.75" x 16.25". Creasing and folds with separation and loss. Chipping to edges. Foxing and toning. Ink show through and minor ink splattering. Professionally repaired and lightly encapsulated in Mylar for protection. Not examined out of plastic housing. Overall, in near very good condition.

This elegantly penned sermon to "Mrs. Shepperd" features food, drink, and prayer as the end of the Revolutionary War draws near. In part: "Last Thursday (April 24th) was here a day of joy, great mirth / On the account of the glorious peace / (Swords to be sheathed, all wars to cease) / A sermon made just like the thing / Was preached then by Mr. Spring / The sheriff in his proper station / From court house read the proclamation / Militia heard (were under arms) / And Gentlemen (all from their farms) / The close (was as it ought to be) / mirth decent & hilarity."

"The Presidentess - spry to leap / led first as Shepherd leads the sheep / The rest push'd on with sturdy straddle / With each in hand - a pudding paddle...Just thirteen quarts of Indian meal / Each had a spoon - of white wood metal / Each at her side - a nice tin kettle...Thirteen huge handsome white wood bowls / Received it smoking from the coals...Each by her side a little mug / And each a little lasses jug / They all sat tight each by her bowl / And eat & talked, all cheek by jowl / They eat & almost burst their laces..."

"They drank to Lady Washington / They soon grew faint & very dry / So drank the congress secondly / They wish'd the peace continue might / And took a draught to make it light / Next thirteen states (they drank upon't) / Declar'd they would not have Vermont / Next Independence (tis no less) / They lept once round to its success...Next to their husband's reformation / So drank once more - it was their fashion / May men & women too unite / They drank, then sigh'd & wish'd tonight / Let happiness prosperity / on us & ours, attendant be...Next reformation to all men...They sip'd once more & cried Amen..."
