Massachusetts Bay 1779 Newspaper: Washington Pardons Deserters, War News, Etc.

An issue of "The Independent Ledger and the American Advertiser", Vol. 1, No. 49. Printed by Draper & Folsom. 4pp, measuring 9.5" x 14.75", Boston, dated May 17, 1779. With details on an Act for Confiscating Estates of Certain Persons, along with a proclamation made by General Washington issuing a pardon for deserters. With other significant Revolutionary War news from Philadelphia, Trenton, Charleston, and Boston. The newspaper has flattened folds, with light toning, foxing, dampstaining, and soiling throughout. Slightly rough edges. Posting hole which affects no text. Very good overall.

Whereas every government hath a right to command the personal services of all its members, whenever the exigencies of the State shall require it, especially in times of an impending or actual invasion, no member thereof can then withdraw himself from the jurisdiction of the government, and thereby deprive it of the benefit of his personal services without justly incurring the forfeiture of all his property, rights and liberties, holden under and derived from that constitution of the government to the support of which, he hath refused to afford his aid and assistance…"

"PROCLAMATION by His Excellency GEORGE WASHINGTON, Esq. General and Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States of America issuing a pardon for deserters from headquarters, April 22, 1779."

"Five Hundred Dollars Reward. Broke out of the County Gaol in Boston, on Saturday night the 8th instant, John Jones, who was committed by the Hon. Council as an Enemy to this State: He is about 36 years old, about five Feet seven Inches high, of a dark Complexion, black Eyes, short black hair, and of a guilty Countenance…"

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
