Description:

Van Buren Martin

Martin Van Buren Signed Naval Appointment

One page Document Signed by President Martin Van Buren as "M Van Buren"  and "Mahlon Dickerson" as Secretary of the Navy, 12.25" x 8." Washington, "June 22, 1837." On vellum. Naval Department embossed seal. Soft creasing, light uneven toning. Lovely strong contrasting ink.

An ornate Naval Commission, appointing Enoch G. Parrott as a Passed Midshipman in the Navy. A passed midshipman, sometimes called as "midshipman, passed", is a term used historically in the 19th century to describe a midshipman who had passed the lieutenant's exam and was eligible for promotion to lieutenant as soon as there was a vacancy in that grade. This Naval Commission was only the start of a long and illustrious career for Parrot, who became Lieutenant by 1841, Commander 1861, Captain by 1866, Commodore in 1870, and Rear Admiral in 1873.

An attractive important Naval commission in lovely collectible condition.

Of additional interest is that we are also auctioning the Naval appointment for Enoch Parrott to the position of Lieutenant, signed by President John Tyler, see lot 241.
