Martin Van Buren Scarce Bank of Kinderhook Check from His Days as a Gentleman-Farmer at Lindenwald, PSA/DNA Slabbed & Certified

Partly printed pale blue check signed by former 8th U.S. President Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) as "MVanBuren" at lower right. The unnumbered check, issued from the Bank of Kinderhook at Kinderhook, New York on October 3, 1860, was in the amount of $5 made payable to "E.C." Cancelled at center. With expected edgewear, wrinkles, and isolated holes and discolored spots, else near fine. Slabbed and certified by PSA/DNA as authentic. The check measures 6.25" x 2.875" while the slab measures 9.5" x 4.5".

This check could have been for expenses related to President Van Buren's estate Lindenwald, located 20 miles south of Albany near the village of Kinderhook, New York. After his first and only presidential term ended in 1841, and during his two subsequent bids for the White House in 1844 and 1848, Van Buren would live there as a gentleman-farmer until his death in 1862. The nucleus of the 137-acre estate dotted with American linden trees was a Georgian mansion that Van Buren had renovated to resemble an Italianate villa complete with a 4-storey bell tower. The 36-room house with its red rooflines, yellow brick façade, and dark brown trim can still be visited today. The Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is managed by the National Park Service.

Martin Van Buren broke with three traditions when he assumed the Presidency in 1837: he was the first U.S. President born after the American Revolution, the first one not to speak English as a native language, and the first one not to have attended university. Of Dutch ancestry, Van Buren gained political experience serving in New York state politics and as Governor of New York. He served as U.S. Secretary of State and Vice President under the Jackson administration.

Van Buren’s life-long commitment to American politics is often overshadowed by his failure to win presidential re-election. He was not reelected in 1841; lost the 1844 presidential race as a Democratic candidate; and lost the 1848 presidential race as a Free Soil candidate.
