Description:

Martin Van Buren DS Re: "voyage round the World" - Fascinating!

A 1p document signed by Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), then U.S. Secretary of State and future 8th U.S. President, as "M Van Buren" at lower right. Signed in Washington, D.C. on November 10, 1829. The document, No. 791, is partly handwritten and partly printed by Duff Green, Printer. Bearing a lovely, crisp example of a blind-embossed wafer seal reading "Secretary of State's Office" at lower left. Expected paper folds. Slightly darkened and chipped right margin edges, else near fine. 12.5" x 7.5."

The document records the copyright information for a sailor's memoir, Charles H. Barnard's "A Narrative of the Sufferings and Adventures of Captain Charles Barnard, in a Voyage round the World, During the years 1812, 1813, 1814, 1815, & 1816: Embracing an Account of the Seizure of his Vessel at the Falkland Islands, by an English Crew whom he had Rescued from the Horrors of a Shipwreck; and of their Abandoning him on an Uninhabited Island, where he Resided Nearly Two Years: Embellished with six Copperplate Engravings; also a Chart, Drawn by Himself" (New York: Printed by J. Lindon, 1829). Note that the book title as written on this document features the incorrect date of 1818 instead of the correct date of 1816.

Captain Charles H. Barnard (1781- ca. 1840) was the commander of the "Nanina," a sealer out of Hudson, New York. He and a small crew embarked on an expedition to collect seal skins and sea lion oil in April 1812. After they arrived at their hunting grounds near the Falkland Islands in September 1812, Barnard discovered the shipwrecked crew of the British ship "Isabella," captained by one George Highton, languishing on one of the islands. The intervening War of 1812 had made them enemies, but Captain Barnard pledged to help the castaways. In April 1813, however, while the Americans were retrieving provisions, the British crew stole the "Nanina" and abandoned the Americans on New Island. Captain Barnard and the crew subsisted on seals and sea lions for nearly two years until their rescue in November 1814 by British whalers. Captain Barnard returned to sealing in the Falkland Islands in the early 1820s, but he disappeared from the historical records after the book was published. Captain Barnard's sensational account is still in print today, almost 200 years later!

Martin Van Buren served as U.S. Secretary of State between March 1829 and May 1831, and as U.S. President between 1837-1841.
