Martin van Buren as Gentleman Farmer Quips: "…I have put a sub-soil plough in operation to the amusement of some of my neighbors…", PSA/DNA
ALS
Nice association autograph letter signed by Martin van Buren "M. van Buren," two pages, 8" x 10", Lindenwald [his estate], Kinderhook, New York, April 26, 1843. Van Buren writes to Erastus Corning, at this time a Senator for New York, on agricultural manners. Fine condition, with PSA/DNA certificate.

In part: "…Will you have the goodness to let me know for what price you can obtain for me one or two fair blooded cows for milk. You will recollect that I informed you that my Farmer propensities do not run in the cattle line, & was therefore indisposed to have much opportunity into out-lays of that character. I have however a very fine Durham short horn bull, & think I ought to give him better employment than my yard affords, if I can do it upon reasonable terms. I have put a sub-soil plough in operation to the amusement of some of my neighbors, one of whom said he would not put a thing of the kind in his land upon any terms. I promised myself however the best results, & have no doubt of their becoming popular, even in this land of Dutch obstinacy…".

Lindenwald was Martin van Buren's home and farm purchased during his Presidency, and his permanent home until his death in 1862.

Erastus Corning (1794-1872) was a Democratic politician from New York who served as Mayor of Albany from 1834-1837, and later a significant investor in the Utica and Schenectady Railroads among other ventures, amassing a fortune in the process.
