Description:

Martin Buber, Jewish Philosopher, 1948 Signed Card

BUBER, MARTIN. Autograph Note Signed, “Martin Buber”, 1p, in German, on a bifold notecard, 5.5” x 4.5”, [Jerusalem], circa 1948. Flattened vertical fold at center touches the “M” of “Martin”, smudge to one letter in handwritten text, light creasing, scattered spotting, else near Fine condition. Includes an RR Auction Certificate of Authenticity.

On the front of the notecard is a preprinted message, in German, loosely translated, “I am unfortunately unable to respond personally to all the numerous congratulations on my seventieth birthday, as I had wanted. I must therefore ask you to accept this thank you as if it had been written to you in all heartfelt directness.” Beneath is Buber’s handwritten message to the recipient of this card, “Thank you for a very special letter and well wishes for my seventieth birthday.”

On the inside of the notecard is a preprinted sketch of two weeping willow trees beside a body of water. This image was obviously personal to Buber, being a philosopher of religion and a translator of the Hebrew bible. It is likely a reference to Psalm 137 Verses 1 and 2, which read, “By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. / We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.”

Surely, Buber’s birthday in 1948 was of special importance to him, as the year he turned 70 is the year that Israel declared its independence.

Martin Buber (1878-1965) was an Austrian Jewish and Israeli religious philosopher, biblical translator and interpreter, and master of German prose style. Buber’s philosophy was centered on the encounter, or dialogue, of man with other beings. This thought reached its fullest dialogical expression in his famous work, “Ich und Du”, later translated to English as “I and Thou”. Buber was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature ten times, and the Nobel Peace Prize seven times.
