Philippe Henri Marquis de Ségur
Versailles, France, January 8, 1785
Marquis de Ségur Signed Pension Papers for Infantry General, 25+ Yr Veteran
PPDS
A 1p document in French signed by Philippe Henri, Marquis de Ségur (1724-1801), then in his role as Minister of War, as "Le Mal. de Ségur" ("le mal." being an abbreviation for "le maréchal," or "marshal") at lower right. January 8, 1785. Versailles, France. Partly printed and partly manuscript on vellum. The military pension document includes a lovely printed border vignette featuring a crowned orb with the Bourbon fleur-de-lis at top, and putti displaying arms and armaments along the sides. Docketed and co-signed by three additional officials recto and verso; one at lower left confirming that the document was properly registered on February 5, 1785; and two notations verso, one dated July 1785, and the other dated May 1789. Expected wear including creases, isolated edge darkening, and minor weathering. The handwriting at top is a little faded, else near fine. 13.125" x 10.125."

This "Récompense Militaire" ["Military Pension Award"] was granted to Pierre François Hondard, a 56-year-old army veteran from Baralle, a town in northeastern France near the present day Belgian border. His abbreviated service record indicates he had completed 29 years of consecutive military service, 16 of these as a brigadier, or general of brigade. In acknowledgement of his services, Hondard was granted an annual pension of 126 Livres. The pensioned officer belonged to a light infantry battalion called the Chasseurs des Ardennes, a unit newly minted under this title in January 1784.

Philippe Henry, Marquis de Ségur was himself a longtime military veteran. He had fought in Italy, Germany, Bohemia, and Belgium in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War, losing an arm in his early 20s. He served as Secretary of State for War under Louis XVI from 1780-1787.
